Obituary for Mrs. Julia Yu Ho

April 16, 1941 - February 25, 2022
Foster City, California | Age 80

Mrs. Julia Yu Ho passed away on February 25, 2022 in Foster City, California after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Julia, or Juli/Julita, as she was known to her family and friends was born to Enrique and Carmen Yu, and the first of six children to be born in Cuba, on April 16, 1941. She had fond memories of growing up in Agramonte, Cuba and recalled wonderful birthday celebrations with the neighbors, lovely people, and trips to the beach, especially Varadero beach. She went to Ciudad Estudiantil de Colon, a Catholic boarding school, and graduated high school and bacillerato at the top of her class. She went on to study chemical engineering at University of Santa Clara for a year before fleeing the Cuban revolution. She and her brother Kico landed in Miami, Florida on December 16,1961 as Cuban refugees. She married John S. Ho and settled in San Francisco in 1963. She was especially close to her younger sister Ana, her best friend who she talked to weekly until she died from leiomyosarcoma in 2009.

Julia worked many jobs throughout her life; many years as an accountant clerk for the fashion store Joseph Magnin, and the county of San Mateo school and library systems. She persevered and received her college degree in Human Services at College of Notre Dame in 2007. She found fulfilling work and wonderful colleagues at Caminar clinic and Laurel and Sunnybrae schools, where her kindness and concern were well appreciated. She found in St. Luke's and the Legion of Mary in particular, her community of friends and faith. She enjoyed eating good food, shopping for good deals, and going to warm beaches.

As a mother, Julia was the model of unconditional love; she supported children Christine and Gallen through different phases of life and adventures patiently. She was incredibly gracious in welcoming and including everyone she met. Her children and grandchildren learned qualities of inclusion, acceptance, and understanding for people from all walks of life and experience. She is survived by her brother Roberto (Kico), sister Ester in Hong Kong, children Christine and Gallen, and grandchildren Lee, Sonam, Mika, Yeshey, Kuenley, Aidan, and Emerson. Memorial services were held at St. Luke Catholic Church in Foster City on March 12, 2022 and St. Bartholomew's Church in Miami, Florida on March 18, 2022.
