Obituary

Mr. Edem Asuquo Udo Ekong was born on May 14, 1944 in Afaha Etok Ibesikpo, Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. He was the first child of Chief Asuquo Udo Ekong and Mrs. Arit Ekong. He had three sisters and three brothers; namely Iquo, Arit, Eno and Etim, Bassey, and Sunday. Sadly, all of Mr. Edem's siblings have gone to be with the Lord prior to Mr. Edem joining them in Glory; may their souls continue to rest in perfect peace.

Mr. Edem Asuquo Udo Ekong's family history is and will always be associated with the arrival of the Lutheran Church in Nigeria. Their family history is deeply entwined with Lutheranism and Chief Asuquo Udo Ekong was among the first set of elders at Afaha Lutheran Church for many years. Mr. Edem had many seasoned and educated uncles, cousins and other extended family members who were prominent figures in the Lutheran faith and they were particularly excited by it's uplifting reforms and spiritual growth.

Mr. Edem Asuquo Udo Ekong is one of the grandchildren/nephews of the Late. Rev (Dr.) Jonathan Udo Ekong, who is one of the founding fathers of the Lutheran Church of Nigeria. He was one of the listed choir members of the Afaha Lutheran Church till he went on for teacher training.

Mr. Edem's father was a trained teacher and a retired military personnel. His father's teachings greatly imprinted Mr. Edem heavily and gave him a navigation point to direct the course of his life. Mr. Edem and his siblings successfully completed the First School Leaving Certification at Lutheran Primary School at Nung Oku, which was established by the Lutheran Church. He also went to the Teachers Training College (TTC) established by the Lutheran Church at Ikot Ekpene. For his Grade Two Certification his skill and passion for serving humanity started from his training as a teacher, mentor and father as well.

By 1974, Mr. Edem came to the USA to advance his education at San Francisco State University and successfully completed a Bachelors in Sociology, with flying colors. While teaching was a passion of his, he followed his natural business acumen to start a successful commercial cleaning business. He also completed over 25 years of service as a Public Safety Officer at University of Notre Dame de Namur, until his retirement in 2013.

Since his retirement, he has fully enjoyed his titles as Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Cousin and Friend to many of his relatives. Mr. Edem was a formal member of Hope Lutheran Church in San Mateo, Ca from arrival in the USA to his death. Mr. Ekong's sudden departure and the demand to come home by His Creator cannot be questioned. He is in a better place even though it hurts as we the family members and relatives in various parts of the world cannot say goodbye to him.

To our church family and friends around the world, we want to thank you all for your help and loving contributions and prayers at this painful time in the family. Your support rendered to our family at this critical time is a debt that we cannot repay but hope that The Almighty God will do it. May God Richly Bless You All.
