Tribute & Message From The Family

Mary was the third of five children born to the Yasuhiro family in Brighton, Colorado. Her family soon relocated to Southern California. She began Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California and graduated in the Internment Camp in Rohwer, Arkansas. She was able to leave the Internment camp early by participating in a work program sending her to Detroit, Michigan. There she met and married Tetsuya Tsuda and gave birth to two children. The Tsuda family returned to the West Coast in 1955 making San Mateo, California their final home.

Mary was active as Class-Mother, PTA Officers, in the Jr Matrons at the San Mateo Buddhist Temple, as a Tutor, Boy Scout and group chaperon. She used her seamstress skills by working for decades at Sunrise Cleaners in downtown San Mateo. She was generous in helping immigrant neighbors navigate their new lives. Mary will be missed for her quick wit and playful nature.

Mary is survived by son Dani Tsuda of Sunnyvale, CA; daughter Patti Mitsunaga (Steven Mitsunaga) and granddaughter Torrey Mitsunaga of Culver City, CA and sister Ruby Yuri Kawada of Honolulu, HI.

I am so sorry to hear of Mary's passing. I will always remember her wit and happy nature when I saw her at temple in my childhood and later as an adult. She always remembered everyone and always made us all laugh! She always helped the BWA and temple. I miss her cheerful countenenance and am happy she had such a full and long life.

Your mom was so welcoming to us (the "bros" from San Francisco) when we'd stop by to visit with Patti. We'd pull up a chair in the kitchen, and we'd chat with your mom like we'd known her for years. Her kindness, warmth, and of course her friendly smile made us all feel right at home. Thank you Mrs. Tsuda. On behalf of my wife, Debbie, and me, may you rest in peace.
