Tribute & Message From The Family

Loving mother and grandmother

Carol Denehy passed away on June 26, 2019 in San Mateo, CA. She is survived by her daughter, Pam Alvarado, and grandsons, Ryan and Griffin Alvarado.

The daughter of Richard Denehy and Sophie Balandis, she was born in San Francisco on September 11, 1944. Longtime Bay Area residents, her family settled at Candlestick Point after World War 2. Carol spent her childhood in Cupertino and San Mateo, graduating from San Mateo High School.

Carol always loved learning – she achieved a bachelor degree in business from University of San Francisco, bachelor degree in psychology from San Francisco State University and a masters degree in counseling from Humboldt State University. Her love of learning continued throughout her life thru her travels and her love of reading.

Carol started her career as a teller at Bank of America, being promoted many times and eventually working as a payroll analyst for the bank in San Francisco. After leaving the bank, she changed course after receiving her masters degree in counseling. She dedicated her second career to helping seniors working as a social worker for Rosener House Adult Day Care.

Carol was very dedicated to her family. She moved back to San Mateo after many years to care for her mother and took three years away from her career to serve as "grammy nanny"to her oldest grandson, Griffin. After her time as "grammy nanny", she was a huge presence to her grandsons – visiting weekly, taking them on summer Elderhostel trips, trips to Coyote Point Museum and gingerbread house making.

Her passions included – travel (especially Hawaii with her mother, daughter and grandsons) reading, her cats and, in her last year, her dog, Happy.

She will be missed greatly by her family and friends as she touched them all with her generosity, selflessness and love.

Dear Pam and other family members,
Another loss of another beautiful spirit here on earth. I'm glad I had the opportunity to have worked with Carol for the years I was at Rosener. Smiles all the way will be missed. My prayers for the eternal repose of her soul with strength and comfort for the rest of the family in this time of sadness and grievance.

Dear Pam and boys,
Our family is so very sorry for the loss of your wonderful mother/grandmother. We live next door to her for over 50 years. She would come outside each morning and ask how my mom was doing, and you could tell how much she cared. She was a great neighbor, a kind and Genuine friend and is deeply missed.

I am sorry for your loss dear friends. I wonder if I won the "cat vs dog" banter with Carol since she ended up getting Happy the dog this last year instead of more cats :). One Christmas she tried to jibe me by giving me a cat Christmas book. Many good memories that we will soon share.
