Tribute & Message From The Family

Alice Herning passed away in the early morning hours of April 28, 2017. She died peacefully at the age of 96, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. To everyone who knew and or met Alice, she was a kind, intelligent and graceful woman who loved her family, friends and community above all else.

The daughter of Joseph and Loretta (Dunne) White, Alice was born on October 30, 1920, in Stockton, California. Alice and her siblings, Martha White Duff and Joseph White, were raised in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Returning back to her California roots for higher education, Alice attended Dominican College and graduated with a Bachelors in Education in June of 1944. It was during her college years, that Alice met her soon to be husband James Herning, after an introduction by her lifelong friends Evelyn and Bob Rossi. As Alice loved to reminisce, she graduated from college on a Saturday, and married her love, James Herning, on a Thursday in the year of 1944.

Shortly after their wedding, the young pair began the journey of travel and assignments as an active-duty military couple traveling throughout the United States during the World War II era. After spending time in Long Island and North Carolina, Alice returned to her family home in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, while James served his country in Europe. In May of 1945, Alice and James welcomed their first son, James Herning, Junior.

Upon James' return home from active WW II duty, the family moved to San Francisco, California, and in 1947, welcomed their second son, Michael Herning. After a few years of city life, the family moved down to the peninsula and settled in San Mateo, California, in 1954. Both James and Michael attended St. Matthews School. And as members of the Peninsula Golf and Country Club, the family spent many memorable Sunday evenings enjoying dinner and friends on the beautiful grounds of the Club. Alice happily resided in her family home on Seville Way until the time of her death.

As a woman of faith and generosity, Alice participated in St. Matthew's Church, and supported local philanthropic organizations including Samaritan House, and the Garden Café, an auxillary charity organization benefitting the Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital.

Alice is survived by her sons James Charles Herning, MSW, PhD, and Michael Herning; her niece Molly Duff and nephew John Duff; grandchildren Kathy Herning Boebel, Kristen Herning Wernig, Elena Herning Schiebel, Patrick Herning, and Hillary Herning; and her great-grandchildren Scout Schiebel, Grace Schiebel, Lucas Boebel, Logan Boebel, and William Boebel.

Friends and family are invited to attend a rosary in Alice's honor on Thursday May 4, 2017, at 7 PM, at Sneider Sullivan's Funeral Home, 977 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo, California 94402. A funeral mass will be held on Friday May 5, 2017, at 11 am, at St. Timothy Catholic Church, 1515 Dolan Avenue, San Mateo 94401. In honor of Alice's generous spirit, her family kindly requests that donations be considered to Samaritan House in lieu of flowers. You may reach Samaritan House at 650- 341-4081 or 4031 Pacific Blvd., San Mateo, CA 94403.
